Field Day

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Friday, May 20th will be the date for Field Day this year.  To ensure the success of Field Day, we rely on the outstanding support from our volunteers (aka parents ). I have created an online sign-up sheet that will organize where we need help. If you would like to come up and just watch your child rotate through the stations, you are more than welcome to join us but we ask that there be no younger siblings brought to school on this day. Please remember that whether you are volunteering or just watching, you must check in at the front office for a Raptor Badge.

Our Field Day will be broken down into a morning session (9:00 – 11:00) and an afternoon session (12:20-2:20) with lunch in between (parents are asked to not have lunch with your child on this day as they will be having picnics around the campus). We will also need help setting up each station and cleaning up afterwards.

My goal is for you to be able to see your child’s class as they rotate through your station and to hopefully have enough volunteers that you can give each other breaks to go watch your child periodically (if able). K, 1, and 2 will be outside in the morning and inside in the afternoon. 3, 4, and 5 will be inside in the morning and outside in the afternoon.

If you would like to volunteer for this year’s field day, please sign-up online:

Please understand that the stations are subject to change if needed. Feel free to sign up for the morning, afternoon or both sessions if you wish. We also need canopies for shade at the outdoor stations and we ask that you write your name somewhere on them and pick them up that afternoon.

Thank you for making Field Day your child’s favorite day of the year!  We couldn’t do it without you!!!

May 2-6

Second Grade Choir Program Tuesday 5:45pm
Homework:
Math: Geometry Homework paper
Students will go around their house and find household objects that resemble 3D shapes. For example, a refrigerator may look like a rectangular prism. They will than record the number of sides, vertices and edges for the object.

The second part of the assignment involves them finding a small 3D object at home. Something that can fit in their hand. It can be a sphere, pyramid, rectangular prism, triangular prism, cube, or even a cylinder. They will than place the object in a bag and come up with 3 hints for the class to guess what shape they have concealed in the bag. For example, they may have a pack of juicy fruit gum. The hints could be: I have 12 edges. I have 8 vertices. I am not a cube. We will be guessing each others hidden shapes in class on Friday.

This week we are learning:

Math:  Students will continue with Geometry where they will be able to classify and sort polygons based on the number of sides and vertices that the object has. They will also learn how to classify 3d shapes based on their attributes such as the number of sides and vertices the possess. In addition to this students will be doing some decomposing of 2d shapes. For example, they will be able to decompose two-dimensional shapes such as cutting out a square from a rectangle, dividing a shape in half, or partitioning a rectangle into identical triangles and identify the resulting geometric parts.

Science: We will continue our unit on animals and their environments. Students will learn more about  adaptations that animals have that help them survive. We will look closely at food chains this week.
